Conditionals · Match Terms to Definitions

Match the conditional vocabulary

Match each term to the definition that fits it. The code is there so you can see what each term refers to; one definition fits no term.

if temperature > 30:
    print("hot")
elif temperature > 15:
    print("warm")
else:
    print("cold")

Definitions

  1. The branch that runs when none of the tests were True
  2. Another test, checked only if every earlier one was False
  3. The indented lines that belong to an if, elif or else
  4. A way to repeat lines for as long as a test stays True
  5. A symbol such as > or == that compares two values
  6. An expression that is either True or False, such as temperature > 30

Choose the definition for each term

Each definition fits at most one term, and at least one definition fits none.

Why this activity was chosen
  • Bloom level: L1 Knowledge: Pair each technical term with the definition that fits it.
  • Block Model level: Atoms (step 1 of 4): individual syntax elements: names, operators, keywords and values.
  • Misconception targeted: shown after you answer, so it does not give the answer away.

Recall of vocabulary is the base of the taxonomy, and matching tests several related terms at once, including the pairs novices mix up. The terms are anchored to a short code fragment so each definition can be checked against something concrete, and one extra definition fits no term so the last pair cannot be answered by elimination.

AI’s role here: AI may point at the part of the code a term refers to. It must not reveal the pairing, because retrieving the link is the skill.
